Linn 360 PWAB technical information: https://docs.linn.co.uk/wiki/index.php/360_pwab/0
The Linn 360 PWAB (Passive With Aktiv Bass) brings Linn’s flagship loudspeaker performance to systems built around separate amplification. Its 360 Array uses a three-way analogue passive crossover, while the integrated bass system combines Linn’s Power DAC technology with the advanced Pistonik motor system for exceptionally powerful, controlled, and low-distortion bass. Available in Linn’s Glasgow, Signature, and Classic finish collections — or a custom colour of your choice — the 360 PWAB can also be personalized with silver or black anodised drive unit trim.
The Linn 360 PWAB brings Linn’s flagship loudspeaker design to systems that use separate amplification.
Its goal is simple: reproduce music with exceptional clarity, realism, scale, and very low audible distortion. As a result, the speakers seem to disappear into the performance. Vocals appear naturally in space, instruments gain convincing depth, and the soundstage extends well beyond the cabinets.
The PWAB design combines a passive 360 Array with an advanced Aktiv bass system. Therefore, owners can choose their own amplification for the upper frequencies while still benefiting from Linn’s Power DAC and Pistonik technologies in the bass system.
The Linn 360 PWAB is a 4-way floorstanding loudspeaker with a passive upper section and an Aktiv bass system.
The tweeter, midrange, and upper-bass drivers use a three-way analogue passive crossover. External amplifiers then power the 360 Array.
Meanwhile, the lower-bass section remains active inside the loudspeaker. It uses Linn’s Power DAC and Pistonik motor system for greater control and lower distortion.
In addition, owners can use the 360 PWAB with Linn Exakt technology. This setup requires external amplifiers and an Exaktbox.
The 360 Array combines the tweeter, midrange, and upper-bass drivers into one carefully integrated section.
First, the 19 mm tweeter uses a thin-ply woven carbon dome. This material combines low mass with high rigidity, which helps the tweeter reproduce high frequencies with speed and detail.
Next, the 64 mm midrange uses the same thin-ply woven carbon dome material. It handles the critical midrange with clarity and precision.
Finally, the 190 mm aluminium-diaphragm upper-bass driver extends the array into the lower frequencies.
In the PWAB version, external amplification powers all three sections through Linn’s three-way analogue passive crossover.
Linn’s Pistonik motor system plays a major role in the 360’s bass performance.
Pistonik aims to keep the drive unit moving in a highly linear way throughout its full range of travel. To achieve this, Linn uses a long-stroke motor design with an extended magnetic gap.
This approach helps reduce the magnetic, mechanical, and thermal effects that can create distortion.
As a result, the bass drivers can move large volumes of air while staying under precise control. This helps the 360 produce deep and powerful bass without losing accuracy.
The Pistonik motor system also needs a suspension that can support its wide range of movement.
For this reason, Linn developed a dedicated suspension system using advanced multi-physics simulation.
The suspension stays controlled and linear during normal movement. However, as the driver approaches its maximum excursion, the suspension quickly increases in stiffness.
This behavior helps protect the driver while keeping its movement stable and predictable.
The 360 uses aluminium diaphragms for its upper-bass and lower-bass drive units.
Aluminium offers a strong combination of rigidity and low weight. Therefore, it helps the drivers respond quickly while reducing unwanted break-up behavior within their operating ranges.
Linn also carefully optimises the connection between the diaphragm, surround, and Pistonik motor system. This helps control resonance and improve linearity.
In addition, Linn finishes the visible aluminium surfaces to a high standard so the drivers match the refined appearance of the rest of the loudspeaker.
The Aktiv bass system is one of the key features of the 360 PWAB.
It combines Power DAC technology with Linn’s Pistonik motor system.
Power DAC combines digital-to-analogue conversion and amplification into a single stage. Therefore, Linn can extend the digital signal path and reduce unnecessary stages in the signal chain.
This approach also creates an efficient and ultra-low-noise platform for the lower-bass system.
The Power DAC controls two 220 mm long-throw aluminium-diaphragm lower-bass drivers. These drivers also use Linn’s Pistonik motor technology.
Together, the Power DAC and Pistonik system allow the 360 to move large amounts of air while maintaining control. As a result, the speaker can produce bass with impressive depth, weight, and impact.
Unlike the 360 Exakt Integrated, the 360 PWAB lets the owner choose separate amplification for the 360 Array.
The tweeter, midrange, and upper-bass sections operate through Linn’s three-way analogue passive crossover. External amplifiers then power these sections.
The PWAB also provides three pairs of binding posts for connection to the external amplification system.
Linn designed the passive crossover to reduce unwanted resonance. Instead of using a conventional printed circuit board, Linn mounts the crossover components to a dense structure with vibration-absorbing adhesive.
Meanwhile, the lower-bass system remains Aktiv. Linn’s Power DAC technology and Pistonik motor system control this section internally.
The PWAB also includes one XLR connection for the bass system.
The 360 PWAB can also operate with Linn Exakt technology.
To use Exakt, the system requires external amplifiers and an Exaktbox.
The PWAB includes one Exakt Link connection for external Exakt operation.
This gives owners more flexibility. They can start with a traditional passive amplification setup and later move to an Exakt-based system if desired.
The 360 PWAB can also support room correction when used with a Linn Network Music Player.
Every room affects the sound of a loudspeaker, especially at lower frequencies. Room size, construction, and speaker position can all change the final result.
A Linn Network Music Player can help the system account for these effects. Therefore, the listener can hear more of the 360’s intended performance in the actual listening room.
The 360 cabinet combines acoustic performance with a distinctive visual design.
Its curved front baffle wraps smoothly around the sides of the loudspeaker. In addition, the cabinet gradually tapers from bottom to top.
Linn shapes the area around each driver to suit its acoustic requirements. The drivers also sit flush with the front surface.
Together, these design choices help sound disperse more cleanly into the room. At the same time, they give the 360 its recognizable sculpted appearance.
The 360 also makes a strong visual statement.
Its curved cabinet works together with detailed machined trim around the 360 Array.
Linn machines a series of concentric arcs into the trim. These arcs reference the grooves of a vinyl record and pay tribute to Linn’s heritage and the Sondek LP12 turntable.
Customers can choose Silver or Black anodised trim. Therefore, the detailing can complement either the cabinet finish or the surrounding room.
In addition, Linn offers a custom finish option to match any colour.
Customers can also select either Silver or Black anodised trim.
